Matt and Audrey Pound

One of my new favorite places...

I (Matt) had the opportunity to preach this last Sunday at our English speaking church here in Thailand.  What do you say to a room full of people living abroad, doing everything from rescuing young women from the sex trade to teaching physical education at a German school?

What do I share with them about God and life?

I suppose it depends on where I am and what has been filling my heart lately, and on what I would say to anyone who asked me what I believe and why.

It is always a little hard on my heart that the things which so inspire and transform my life seem so bland and even offensive to my friends who don't share my faith. (All the deepest joys are best shared with the ones we love).

Words are a poor medium for communicating some things.

In my home country it seems that people from my faith (Christians) are better known for what they oppose, than what they are for.

Perhaps we should try more often to say what we are for, what we love, what we hope for.  This is my humble attempt to express what is inexpressible in my own heart and life.  This is what I am for, what drives and inspires me, and the hope I have.

Matt's Unusual Hope #1

I believe that God is passionate about setting everything in the world right.

So slavery, abuse, addiction, violence, oppression, disease, hunger, poverty, selfishness, cancer, even death have an end.  (I really believe that)  I know about ISIS, I have seen grinding poverty, but I still hold on to hope that there is a God who is strong and will make everything right.

I believe we should all work towards that goal.

No, we won't and can't achieve it on our own, but that's where faith comes in: we aren't on our own.

Matt's Unusual Hope #2

There is no easy way to say this, but you and I are part of the problem.  We need to be set right before we try to set anything else right.

I would be content if things were good for me, my family, and the people I care about.  That may not be evil, but it isn't quite good either.  The world will never be right as long as that is what the majority of us are content with.

Its easy to think that the truly great evils in our world are because a few people are really screwed up. But that isn't really true, the evil in our world is there because all the people are a little screwed up.

You don't have to understand all this to sense in yourself a need for forgiveness and a need for something more than your own determination, to be made the way you should be.

We are part of the problem, how do we become part of the solution?

Matt's Unusual Hope #3

The people who formerly contributed to the brokenness and destruction of our world (you and I) can become the people who heal it.

You're wrong.  I'm wrong.

If you can honestly say that, you aren't far from my God.

God loves to take broken people and not only heal them, but make them healers.

You need not look far to see the need for loving healers in our world.

Matt's Unusual Hope #4

I think God wants to save people for the world, not from it.

Last Sunday, I preached on a verse from the Bible that says God is reconciling everything in heaven and on earth to Himself through Jesus. (Colossians 1: 19-20)

Remember when I said God was passionate about setting everything in the world right?

I think of Jesus as God breaking into the world to turn the tide, to start making things new, making things right. He would provide the forgiveness we all need (and the assurance of love, even if no one else in the world seems to loves us) and transform people who would then join Him in transforming the world.

We need more of those kind of people.

Matt's Unusual Hope #5

Until All Things Are New

Easter is important because it is announcing that new life has come.

God isn't just propping up things as they are,  He isn't just making us slightly better people or putting band aids on the worlds problems.

He is making all things new; starting with us now, and reaching to the earth itself.

This has hit me hard living in Thailand: My life is a tool for God to use to heal the world (I cannot do everything, but I can do some things; I am part of the story, not the story).

I am not going around yelling at everyone: "the things you believe are wrong!"

I am saying join God (and us) in bringing reconciliation and peace and justice and love to our world.

God starts with you, but He doesn't end there,  Being a Christian isn't only about future hope.  It is about hope right now inspiring life; the kind of life that brings healing to a broken world.  And I believe one day even death will die.

I love you guys! This was an uncomfortable post for me to write.  I am a private person by nature and this is a glimpse into my heart.  My religion may be private, but my hope cannot be. All my greatest joys are better shared, and so many of you are friends and family I love deeply.

Thank you for your love and support!

Love from Thailand,
Matt

Sorry, I can't resist throwing these in (our new local swim hole):

Hi everyone, Audrey here! Well, it is safe to say that the parent’s retreat was a fantastic success! Going in to these 3 days of retreat and teaching with our house parents, we wanted to focus on equipping them, strengthening our FHF community and giving them a fun, relaxing time.

These sweet people are the heartbeat of Faithful Heart Foundation. Over the past 10 years, God has brought each couple to Faithful Heart’s doorstep…for one purpose. They wanted to bring orphans into their families. Now, each couple (6 couples at this point) has a houseful of children—they care for them daily…and yearly. Matt & I feel like it’s such a privilege to work with these couples and get to have a part in the Kingdom work God is bringing about here—transforming the lives of these sweet children through the obedience of people like this…people with open hearts, willing to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the hurting children in Thailand.

^^^(Left) That’s the whole group! The staff are in the blue shirts (ehm, shirts designed by me! So fun!) and we had a little (big) competition going over the 3 days, so the parents were divided into teams—orange, purple, magenta. (Right) Gawley led us several times throughout each day in worship—our theme song was Oh Happy Day, but in Thai—so great. :) Listen (in English) here!

^^^(Left) Us! Hot and tired, but happy :) (Right) A little break time for our hard workers…Dave, Pring, Shirley, Tiida and Puan. That’s a good bunch of people right there. We had the help of our college students and a few friends from church!

^^^Remember that little (big) competition I was telling you about? Here’s some of the action! Team building, strategy, and camaraderie—not only was it a blast to watch, but we just continued to see the community of our little FHF get stronger and deeper. These guys only see each other at Foundation meetings and monthly worship times. It is so good for them to get to know each other, share in this community and share in life! Matt mentioned it during the retreat and I totally agree—this retreat is an invaluable time for our foundation parents and community. We need the unity, encouragement, excitement and love that it brought about!

^^^(Left) Day 3…the final hours—we announced the 1st place winners of the combination of team points from all three days. The orange team was jumping for joy at their victory :) Not a bad prize either! $30 each to the shopping center (similar to Walmart). Needless to say, they loved it.

(Right) This week in Thailand is also the Thai New Year. At the end of the last day, the house parents planned this traditional Thai ceremony to honor and bless their leaders (Dave & Shirley). Oh man, it was such a moving time—they offer a blessing to their leaders and ask for forgiveness of any offense from the last year, then the leaders return a blessing to them.

^^^An ending prayer for our leaders and Faithful Heart Foundation. Invaluable times.

Thank you for you prayers & love!

Miss you & sending love,

Audrey & Matt

Today marks two months of life in Thailand for the Pound’s! In some ways time is flying, but then again it feels like ages ago that we boarded that plane in snowy Denver. Matt & I just feel blessed (and shocked) that we’re actually here, doing this work! So exciting & humbling.

^^^The 31st of March was my 27th birthday—maybe the 1st of many we spend in Thailand :) Matt & the Callahan's took me out to this great restaurant…Organic Coffee Bus (don’t ask about the name, I have no idea) & Matt even found me a DQ ice-cream cake! (he’s one of the best!)

IMG_0458

^^^Tiida had a major English speech coming up—tough assignment! If you asked me to give a speech in Thai, all you’d get is my deer-in-the-headlights look, haha :)

IMG_0477IMG_0482

^^^So, here we have a few things happening. As you know, Matt is trying hard to get this aquaponics system up and running. He finally received his AliExpress order of the kiddie pools (for the fish, of course!) and the pumps for the system. Then, the weather got real, real hot. And that’s when he realized that it’d be a great idea to cover the project to protect it from the heat & the rain (could totally throw off his water levels)—thus, a new project arose! Roof building. He and Gawley are almost finished!

^^^(left) That bread tastes as good as it looks. We’ve got Matt on a bi-weekly bread making routine :) (Right) Our new college student, Pring, moved in this week! She rode down from our Mae Chaem dorm (3 hour ride) on public transit, and got dropped in the middle of Chiang Mai—Tiida went out on her motorbike to find Pring. We were so glad to see them ride in with smile on their faces.

^^^The bulk of the last few weeks we’ve all been working on creating sessions for a house parent retreat that we’re hosting on site. For the outdoor sessions we put up a large tent and Matt and Gawley installed a misting spray hose (it’s blazing hot in the afternoon!). All of the house parents will come for 3 days in a row & the staff members (Matt & I included!) will teach sessions (and have assessments) on life-application topics. The sessions we have are: computer skills, map reading, marriage assessment, budgeting, English, child discipline, physical fitness, family nutrition, spiritual gifts, first aid, Thai, and vehicle maintenance. We’ll also have times of fun team building activities, as well as time for worship & prayer!

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the first day of the retreat! It’ll be a busy few days,  but we’re looking forward to getting to know the house parents better.

Thanks for keeping up with us!

All our love,

Audrey & Matt
