Matt and Audrey Pound

schweitzerdesk

There is more to life than a loosely connected string of events. The title for this blog post comes from a book Albert Schweitzer wrote about his own life many years ago.  He has been a powerful inspiration in my own life. I love getting a glimpse into the head of the people I admire.  Not just what they did, or what happened, but how they thought about all those things.  What motivated them?  How did they cope with failure?  Success?

Have you noticed how much easier it is to admire dead people, than people who are alive?  Once someone is dead we are a little more free to imagine them as we would like them to be, good or bad.  The inconvenient thing about people who are alive is that we are constantly experiencing the frustration of a living, breathing, loving, failing person.  In Thailand, we experience so many different feelings some days it is as though we suffered from a sort of emotional overload.  You just feel a lot.  For example: Sunday morning I was reading my Bible and asking God to straightened out my heart, help me relax and receive the day with joyful gratitude.  Audrey and I snapped at each other discussing how we would get to church (via scooter or via car---because that’s a BIG deal??)  I walked outside and realized it was raining (which meant no scooter—Audrey’s preference).  Now in that small dilemma, I felt and thought several things:

“Why are women so difficult?  Why can’t they be like men?”

“Why am I arguing about something I don’t even really care about?”

“I am an idiot.”

“God loves this idiot anyway.”

“I love my wife.  She loves this idiot too.”

“I can apologize and laugh at myself.  I am loved and that’s better than being right anyway.”

“I’m so glad to know God and I’m thankful for His help to just get through some days.”

That was just my morning before church.

That same morning, we met a team from Hong Kong who had come for a short mission trip and they came along with us to church.  As I sat down and listen to the visitors introducing themselves I was struck:

“Hi, we are from Hong Kong…we are happy to be with you this morning…”

“We live in Tajikistan…here for vacation…”

“My wife and I work in Kazakhstan…”

“We’re from the Philippines..”

“We’re from Germany…”

This diverse, multi-national group of people---(I love these people) is our family.  People often ask us if we miss our families back home, and yes, we miss our families a lot! But we haven’t lost our families, we’ve gained more and more family. That is the ebb and flow that is our daily life. An ache in our hearts for the people we love and miss, then joy as we find more than friendship with strangers simply because Jesus has given us both new life and a new purpose for our lives.

I woke up this morning and had some time when I tried to let God sort me out. I had a quick breakfast and I began my Thai homework before our lessons at 10am.  Few things are more effective at demolishing my sense of intelligence and capability than learning Thai.  Perhaps I will be slower in the future to assume that smug arrogance towards another person who struggles to learn something new.  Ebb and flow.

Am I always ecstatic and abounding with joy in Thailand?

No.

Am I always discouraged and frustrated in Thailand?

No.

Am I frequently moving from joy to frustration to joy and back again?

Yes.

And I think that may just be the surest road to real, lasting joy.  I used to think that things had to go the way I wanted if I was to be happy (maybe a type-A personality?).  Thailand is teaching me the art of “Mai Bpen Rai” (something between “it doesn’t matter,” “I don’t mind,” “no big deal,” and, “we’ll take it as it comes”).  So if you ask me now how I am, I might say something like this:

I am grateful, hopeful, excited, and humbled.

Or as the apostle Paul said:

“…as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way…as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.”           (1 Corinthians 6:4,10)

In our joys and sorrows, in our triumphs and failures; thank you for your love and support!

With hope unrelenting in Jesus,

Matt & Audrey

Let me tell you a little story. Back in February, mom and dad Pound (Dave & Sher Pound) flew with us to Chiang Mai to see where we’d be working and living. We landed together at the Chiang Mai airport and were picked up by Faithful Heart’s Dave & Shirley Callahan.

(^^^February 7, 2015, the Callahan’s picking us up from the airport in Chiang Mai.)

On the ride home from the airport Dave C. was riding with Matt and asked what Matt’s parents were up to. Matt told him that his dad had just retired from 40 years of ministry, 35 of those years planting and pastoring at one church! Dave C. quietly sat back with a smile on his face, and said, “I’ll have talk to him about that, our church here has been searching for a pastor…”

The next morning at that very same church, we all sat together and Dave P. leaned over to Matt and said, “now this is the kind of church I could see myself pastoring at.”

Little did we know, just a few months later, the Pound’s would be BACK in Chiang Mai, interviewing with this church and becoming a candidate for the pastoral position!

And here we are, 6 months after moving to Chiang Mai, eagerly waiting for the arrival of Pastor Dave and Sher (aka, mom and dad) as they accepted the position at this church and are moving to Chiang Mai in September! How exciting is this!? Can I get an amen! :)

“I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.

God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” Ephesians 3 (MSG)

but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 (ESV)

I often think of giving in terms of losing.  If I give you money, I have less money.  Or if you give me your coat, I have gained a coat but you have lost one.  But when we give ourselves we lose nothing, and contrary to our expectations, we often end up feeling like we got the better end of the deal.  We have been busy the last several weeks with family and friends coming to stay, to work, to laugh and play.  They gave us the very best gift they could: themselves.  Especially when you have said goodbye to so many you love and moved to a place that is very unlike your home, the face of a friend is precious.  (climbing cliffs 50ft above the ocean and plummeting down into the waves together is also precious—though in a different sort of way).  Friendship is, I believe, one of the rare tastes of heaven we can experience on earth.  The best joys are shared, and few are better than those shared with ones we love.  The past few weeks we have built a roof for a family, painted a dorm for hill tribe students, hosted an Art Day and Game Day for all our orphan children, and taken a delightful vacation to the ocean.

It is an enjoyable experience to do all those things with the people we love.  It is amazing to see how different our friends are from us and from each other.  These different people bring a unique perspective and humor and service (not to mention some very shapely calf muscles---see Chris’ legs on the ladder above).  Many people, many gifts, many ways to serve and give in God’s world.  Let me introduce some of our visitors:

These handsome people are from left to right: (Matt, Gawley, Skyler, and Chris and Mckenzie).  Through the generosity of these people and several others, we were able to purchase 22 new mattresses, pillows, and sheets for the children at the dorm where we painted.  Thank you to all of you who helped!  The house mother at this dorm is an amazing woman named Nid.  She and her husband Brateeb (see below far left) have been living and running this dorm for over 9 years.  She insisted, against all our protests, that we all accept a hand woven shirt that she and the dorm students make there at the dorm as a gift.  We could not have done this project without the additional help of our new friends, Emily and Jolie (see below center), and our college students, Tiida, Joshua, and Gawley (center left).  This was Tiida’s home before she graduated High School and came to live with us.  A good looking, hard working group!

Thank you for all your love, support, and prayers!  Thank you for giving yourselves!
In hope,
Matt & Audrey
