Matt and Audrey Pound

Glimpses of Glory

I sat in a small room full of people at a guesthouse in Thailand at 7am in the morning watching the NBA Championship game.  At one point, a little guy about 8 years old stood up and asked;

"Who else is rooting for the Cavs?'

I raised my hand and we saw each other, but we were bummed to discover we were the only ones in the room.  We exchanged the knowing, Cleveland somber nod---(a long-suffering hope.)  When the game ended so suddenly, I could hardly believe it.  I sat stunned for a moment before launching out of my chair and shouting: "YES!!!  THEY DID IT!"  I had to apologize to the room full of disappointed Warriors fans (though I confess, I wasn't that sorry).

Why does something as seemingly silly and unimportant as a basketball game bring people a very real sense of joy, brotherhood, and even glory?

I think I have sometimes 'over-spiritualized' my life to the point where I write off things like basketball as a 'worldly' distraction.  But I think that is a mistake.  There is a lot of very real, and yes, very spiritual things happening.  Because real people, with real hearts, are experiencing very real emotions.  I think I sometimes forget the old hymn:

'This is my Father's world..."

The orphan boys who recently joined Home of Light were ready to help at our Foundation community service day!

It is not a Christian calling to withdraw from the world or to protect ourselves (or our children) from its tainting influence.  You may not be 'of' this world, but you are called to it.  To live, to love, to serve and to give.  Jesus reminded us that we don't catch evil like a cold---from the outside in---but it comes from within, out of our own hearts.

A little preaching...

Does God care that the Cavs won the NBA title?  I will let wiser minds than mine answer that question. I do know that God does care about people and therefore, He cares about what people care about.  And He is always trying to help us understand Him and what He desires for His children and His world.  And He seems to use just about anything and everything to do that.

That doesn't mean that we should idolize sports in our lives.  But I think if we can see in sports a mirror of our lives (a small, human drama) we can appreciate how we might learn something about ourselves and even about the One who makes and loves human beings.

In a world of mass shootings, racial injustice, and division, the city of Cleveland experienced a moment of powerful, unified celebration (however short lived).

Was it a spiritual revival?  Not quite, but it reveals how something, even something small and seemingly insignificant, (like a basketball game) can give us glimpses of glory.

What would it be like if we experienced something so good, that celebration overwhelmed fears, divisions, hate, and prejudice to the point where people filled the streets to rejoice together?

From my experience, that is a good picture of how the gospel (aka, God's good news to the world) can transform an individual and a community: joy and celebration overriding everything else.

Celebrating new jobs and a new season of life for some of the Foundation's college students! (& special guests)

Let me stretch the metaphor a little further.  Lebron James may have been the hero of the finals, and he is undoubtedly a great player who did great things,  but he did not win the finals.  The team won the finals.

It is human to want and worship heroes.  But the more we come to really know and appreciate ourselves and others, the fewer 'heroes' we find.  What we do find are many remarkable, flawed human beings.  No single one who can do it all, but when they do what they can, and do it well, and as part of a team, and not a lone hero, incredible things can be accomplished. That is how God changes the world.

I really like Shane Claiborne's term 'Ordinary Radical.'  It is a great tragedy that the hero complex has also permeated the Christian community.  We of all people ought to know that there are no heroes in God's family except Jesus.  Just a whole lot of gifted, flawed, incredible, broken people experiencing glimpses of glory and joy overwhelming all else.

No super pastors or mega churches or best selling authors.  No hero missionaries or worship superstars.  Just ordinary, people doing radical things----forgiving their enemies, loving their neighbors, healing prejudice, winning those they disagree with through gentle kindness, rescuing the vulnerable, being fathers and mothers to children without families.

How often I think I want to be right, when all I really want is to be happy.  So happy that I don't even care about being wrong.  So happy that all that divides and angers us vanishes in the midst of celebration.

Our Foundation's community service day with good friends.

After all, the Good News that Jesus brought was not that people aren't as bad as we thought, but that  their God and Father is infinitely better than we dared hope or imagine.

Audrey is two weeks away from her due date (July 30th!) and we are just about bursting with excitement.  The miracle of life is another one of those glimpses of glory---joy overshadowing all else.  Thanks to all who have sent kind and cute baby gifts!  We feel so well loved, thank you!

Our Cell Group is growing!  We've partnered with the youth group of a local Thai church to create a night of Bible study, singing and hanging out!
Last week, we welcomed our 4th little boy into our new orphan home at Faithful Heart Foundation. We place 5 children in each home, so we're still on the lookout for the last boy to join Home of Light.

Mickey is the newest member of the Faithful Heart Family :)

Our foundation directors are still State-side until the end of August, so we've been holding down the fort while they've been gone! We've settled into more of a routine at the office in our new roles as "boss" :) and are enjoying getting to know our Thai staff better.

Every morning Audrey and I take a walk in our neighborhood and all of our neighbors are eager to ask us about the baby and when Audrey is due.  The whole neighborhood is excited with us--we can't wait to be taking our morning walks with a stroller and baby in tow!

Staff and Kids at our Cleaning Day Outreach

Our lives are full (busy, haha!), but so joyful right now.  Thank you for your prayers and encouragement.  Please keep them up!

Love from Thailand,

Tiida, an orphan from a Faithful Heart Dorm, now a college student near graduation to become a teacher;
and one of the boys she has helped rescue last week. (right)

"Here is a simple rule of thumb for behavior:

Ask yourself what you want people to do for you;
then grab the initiative and do it for them!

If you only love the lovable, do you expect a pat on the back?

If you only help those who help you, do you expect a medal?

If you only give for what you hope to get out of it, do you think that’s charity?

Help and give without expecting a return.

You’ll never—I promise—regret it.

Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when we’re at our worst.

Our Father is kind; you be kind."
(Luke 6 The Message)

This is one of the most powerful, encouraging blog posts I think I have ever been blessed to share.  So get ready.  P.S. It isn't even really about us :-)

Some fun pictures of us for the record (since this story isn't really about us--you're welcome Mom)

Have you heard of the the concept of 'Pay-it-forward'?  I love it.
It teaches us two important concepts:

1.  We all have a tremendous amount to be grateful for
2.  We all have tremendous potential to positively affect others

If you have been following our activities here at Faithful Heart then you know we are in the middle of opening a new home for orphaned and at risk little boys.  It is one of those times where you see some of the best and the worst in people.  It can destroy and restore your faith in humanity at the same time.

An Australian friend here asked me:

'What in the world is wrong with people Matt?  Don't give me the Christian answer, I am not a Christian, but I would never do things like this."
(such as selling a human being)

As I thought about his question (a very good one, I might add), I thought its opposite is also valid:

'What in the world is right with people, that they would risk their lives, and give their lives to help others?'

Tiida taking the initiative and doing for others what was done for her.

Meet Tiida.

Tiida is a beautiful, intelligent young woman finishing her bachelors degree to become a teacher.  She is a follower of Jesus and she is an orphan.  Her parents died tragically when she was very young. She only had temporary homes with several relatives before finding her way to our Faithful Heart dorm in a small town a few hours from Chiang Mai. There she found a family and an opportunity to go to school.  She excelled through high school and came to live here at the Faithful Heart College Dorm.  She has been one of Audrey and my best friends. She loves to play sports and she is a great language helper!  One of the most moving experiences since coming to Thailand was the night Tiida sat in our room and shared her life story.

And that was before what Tiida did last month.  She was already one of my heroes, but more than a hero, she is discovering the secret to a good life:

"Don't live just for yourself, invest your life for the good of others."

Tiida knew that a little boy from her village, needed a home and a permanent family.  On her own, she called our social worker to see what needed to be done.  She drove her scooter into town from the village to print the necessary documents, got them signed and made all the arrangements with his relatives to bring the little guy back with her.  He is now the newest member of the Faithful Heart family and our new home for boys.
Joseph, the newest member of our family!

Orphans rescuing orphans.

That delights our hearts!  It energizes us in our own work.  It it reminds us to stop and celebrate the redemption God is working in our lives and in the lives of others around us.

As wonderful as Tiida's story is, I hope it is more than something to brighten your day or move you to become a partner with Faithful Heart
(though both of those things are great! hint, hint).

I hope it is inspiration for your life right now.
How much have you to be grateful for?
Where can you positively affect the lives of others?

You are uniquely placed, right now, right where you are, to love and serve.

Ask yourself what you wish others would do for you, then be like Tiida, and take the initiative and go do it for them.

You will never regret it.

Indeed, it is the path to life.

Movie Day party!

Movie Day for the Big Kids (including Matt and some House Fathers)  Serious sweat!

Another new family member-- David!
On a personal note, please continue to pray for Audrey and I while our directors are in the US.  So far so good, but there are so many things that come up throughout the week, we want to do our work well.  Just imagine having kids in different colleges, schools, looking for jobs, finding new kids, etc.  Its a lot of fun, just busy.  Oh, how we need wisdom beyond what we possess!

Movie Day Shenanigans

Please continue to pray for our Thai language learning.  We have good days then bad ones, then breakthroughs, then total confusion, then whole conversations.

Movie Day Lunch with Staff and Children---Mango Sticky Rice!
Please pray also for Audrey and our son!  We are getting so excited to meet him.  We are closing in on 7 weeks!

One more, pray for my Dad and Mom while they are in the US for the next month.

Gawley and I cleanin' up!
As always, much love from Thailand!

Sawadii Krup!

Greetings from Chiang Mai, Thailand and all our family at Faithful Heart, including some of our newest members!  Meet Gun and Om-sien, the future members of our new home for boys---Home of Light.  I know it is often disheartening to read about the plight of children and it is heart-wrenching to see so many in need or without much love.  But just look at those little guys; can you possibly not love them?  There is a special beauty, and I would even say a glory in each one.  It reminds me of two songs I like, one by David Crowder who sings;

"You make everything glorious...I am yours, what does that make me?"

And another Gungor:

"You make beautiful things out of dust...you make beautiful things out of us"
Meet Chuum and Bpan, our new House Parents---we really like these two already.  Before we hired them, one of our house mothers was sick and they jumped right in and helped care for the girls and the family.  They both have servant hearts.

The Maekong River on the northern border of Thailand and Laos on the other side.

Speaking of beautiful things, we spent last weekend in Chiang Saen, an old, small town bordering the Maekong river, just across from Laos.  We were there to celebrate our Thai friend Cherry's wedding.  It was fun to see a new place and celebrate with the bride and groom.  We also discovered a great bike path which follows an ancient brick wall that surrounds the city.

Dave, Shirley and Cherry.

Timmy (the Groom) and his electric blue tux in the 100 degree heat.

Audrey enjoying her fancy bike and some nice shade.
Our beloved leaders, Dave and Shirley, left for the USA and they will be gone for the next 4 months.  We were already a little nervous about their absence, then in a surprising twist, our Thai book keeper also gave her notice to take another job closer to Bangkok. With starting a new home, preparing for Dave and Shirley's departure and finding a new Thai book keeper, we've had a full schedule.  We are tremendously grateful for Pen, our new book keeper, who is already a great addition to our staff.  Please pray for Dave and Shirley while they share about and seek to raise support for the children at Faithful Heart in the USA. And please pray for Audrey and I as we seek to keep things running smoothly here.

Pen is our new book keeper (left)  Thankfully, Kun Tae (middle) will help train her before she leaves.

Having worked as a fence builder, janitor, admissions adviser, tech support person, and gardener, I have to say that your co-workers have a tremendous impact on whether you enjoy your job or not.  We feel so blessed here at Faithful Heart to work among such excellent people.  I just had a meeting with Chuum and Bpan today to try and figure out details about their new home. They told me that was the first thing they noticed when they interviewed with us: the people at Faithful Heart have a genuine desire to serve God and others, and they treat each other like family.  Audrey and I felt the same way when we first came and I am glad people recognize that still.  We have stressful days like everyone else, but the difference is in the genuine care and respect everyone seems to have for everyone else.

Matt's first staff meeting at the helm!

More of the Maekong.

Some lovely flower girls---Thai and German!
Life moves in leaps and bounds.  We have new beginnings, usually from some other beginning's end (I always thought that was a great lyric).  We go through times of transition where everything we are familiar with seems to be tossed in the air and falls back down in a wide scatter.  We tense with the thrill of new, exciting things.  We shiver at the prospect of the unknown and the endless 'what ifs' that plague us.  New responsibilities for us here bring on new fears and anxieties, as well as stirring up old familiar ones.

Please continue to pray for peace and wisdom for us.
Pray too for these new boys and their new parents that they would quickly feel like a family.

It is a crazy process to see up close; finding parents, then children, then a house, furniture, a school (sometimes the children have never gone before), uniforms, shoes, then food for everyone---and all this for a new family.  Those of you who do foster care can appreciate all that is involved.  These times are a little hectic but they are a powerful reminder of why we are here.
It is a joy helping orphans find families and a future.

Please pray about partnering with Faithful Heart in restoring lives and families!
Donors are an essential part of our family.

Instagram worthy---my beautiful bride and our son!

Thank you for your love and support!
In hope undaunted,
Matt & Audrey
