Matt and Audrey Pound

Big Thank You to everyone who helped get these boys bikes!

Putting in work!

Some friends are opening a new cafe, and want a zipline---who you gonna call?

Greetings from Thailand!

Maybe it's just as I grow older or perhaps because I live in a foreign country or perhaps I am finally getting comfortable in my own skin but whatever the reason,

I finally feel less insecure about myself.

Maybe that sounds a bit touchy feel-ly for you men...

I have really enjoyed getting to spend more time with my guy friends lately.  We ride motorcycles, we hike, we build stuff, we talk, we joke, we play sports, and we eat
(sorry to those of you who are still under strict lock down).

But guys can be really insecure.  We are all intimidated by each other.

(And yes, women are too).

First Staff meeting in a while. I missed these friends!

Haircut and eating jelly beans.
Making Food!

After posting my dead lifting video on Facebook, a friend I have not heard from for many years messaged me and asked me to pray for her daughter who is struggling with her body image. She isn't even 12 yet.

It got me thinking.

So often we are so uncomfortable with who we aren't, that we cannot enjoy and appreciate who we are.

When that happens, we cannot appreciate or enjoy others either.

Everyone is a potential threat, instead of a potential friend.
Every gift or talent someone else has, makes us feel less rather than adding more to our lives.

After almost 35 years, I am beginning to feel comfortable with what I am and what I am not.
And, I am enjoying it so much, I thought I would try to share what I am experiencing with you.

One of the most life-changing ideas Jesus presents is that we can gain by losing.
We can share and grow richer.

Studying Online is not easy.

We are still trying to help families in need in our community.

A giant floating water park!

Possession does not have to be exclusive.

A park in the neighborhood is your park, but it happens to be everyone else's park too.

The way Jesus sees the world, he didn't have to cling to anything, because he had everything already.  He could possess by sharing and He taught other people to live the same way.

Let me give you an example.

My wife and I do not own our own house.
We would like to, but so far the opportunity hasn't come.
Most of our friends our age have bought a house.

That doesn't mean we don't have a home.  In fact, we have lots of homes.

We have a homes in Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, South Carolina, Thailand, France, Italy, Germany, and many more.

Jesus said if you left a house for his sake you would receive many more.
And we did.

No, we don't own any houses in those places, but we have friends who have houses in those places who would take us in in a moment.

Industrial quantities of hand sanitizer!

Zipline too!

Grateful for these friends from Prosperous Youth Foundation who came to make sure our kids stayed safe swimming.
I think they enjoyed playing too.

I do not own my own home, but many of my friends do.  So I have a choice.

Should I be jealous of their homes?  Should I wish I had my own?  Should I try to get one no matter what it takes?

Or, should I think about how fortunate I am to be welcome in so many homes?

What could become jealousy and bitterness, instead becomes gratitude.

But what I am most insecure about is not what I have or don't have, but what I am.

When I meet a guy who appears stronger or smarter or more successful or more musical or more athletic or more anything...or seems to be a better dad or a better husband, my tendency is to stay distant from him.

His talent or skill makes me feel inferior.  But that is my fault, not his.

If I was comfortable with what and who I am, I could enjoy what and who he is.

But so long as I am insecure in myself, I will fear and shun people who might make my life richer.

We both lose.

I rob them too, of the good things I might bring to their life.

Can you relate?

Pii Moey having fun with the boys from Home of Light.

The Parker's Going Away Party.

If I remembered that God feels the same way about me (and you!), that I feel about Ezra,
I don't think anything would bother me.

And what happens is, the more insecure we are, the more we judge and criticize the people who make us feel inferior.

If you are feeling like a bad mom, how do you feel when you see that one friend who always has a million awesome projects, meals, and activities for her kids, and manages to look great all the time?

When we feel bad, one way we try to feel better about ourselves is by putting someone else down.

(I do this way too often).

But it isn't that person's fault, it's mine.

When we are comfortable with ourselves, we are comfortable with everyone else.

Even if they are a bit of a show off, its fine.
Because we aren't competing.

4th of July!

We like water buffalo.

Sienna checking on baby Judah.

What does this have to do with Thailand?

In Thailand I am weird all the time.

People are disgusted if I explain how to use toilet paper.
Why don't I use the water sprayer like a sanitary person?

Like a strange person, I choose not to chew on the chicken feet they generously put in my soup.

To Thai people, I am bizarre.  And I get used to that.  And I realize it isn't so bad.

We spend so much time worrying about what people think of us, trying to manage their perceptions of us, hoping they see us a certain way.

It usually doesn't even work.

But if I am weird no matter how hard I try to make them think otherwise, then eventually, I just accept my identity as a weird person.

Imagine if we all just woke up tomorrow and said:
"This is who I am and it is ok."

(Imagine all the businesses that would fail if they could no longer make us feel bad about what we aren't.)

I am not saying we don't all need to change and grow, we do.
But we cannot change or grow until we accept what we are.

Audrey found a Japanese themed coffee shop.
On the Bike!

A cool flower from the Canon Ball Tree.

Insecurity is like a poison in all our relationships.

It ruins all sorts of things that could be good.
It makes everyone else shy to use their gifts. ("Maybe they will think I am showing off?")

If you can sing, sing so we can all enjoy it.
If you can build things, build them so we can all enjoy them.
If you are a good husband, share your secrets so we can all be better husbands.
If you can hoola hoop with 10 hoops, take a video and put it on youtube because that is pretty cool (and maybe other people can learn from you or at least enjoy watching you do it).

I'm serious.

We aren't alive yet.

We are timid little creatures afraid to even use the gifts we have.
We are judgmental little creatures making others afraid to use their gifts.

So we walk around insecure, bitter, jealous, and afraid.

We rob the world of our gifts, and try to scare them out of giving theirs; and we are all poorer.

Lao is one brave little guy!

Guys aren't good at photos.

My assembly crew.

So let's kill our insecurity together.

You are weird and so am I and that is ok.

I like to lift weights.  You like to jog.
I can build a table, you can sing beautifully.
I like to jump off cliffs into water, you like to paint.
I can carry heavy things, Audrey is very smart (my former Thai teacher's words to me).

I am me, and you are you.  And that is good!

All of us are unique Ideas of God
(He thought us up, and thought us worth making).

We all have room to grow better, but we also have a responsibility to discover the talents and gifts latent in us and use them to make God's world a better, more joyful, more fun, more interesting place.

Allow yourself to be you.
Allow others to be themselves.

Appreciate what you have and are.
Appreciate what others have and are.

Lots of love from Thailand!

Sad Goodbyes!

Greetings from Thailand!

Sometimes the greatest thing about life is that it goes on.
And sometimes the most wearisome part of life is that it goes on.

This unprecedented time in our lives has us disoriented and weary, but hopeful too.

Faithful Heart is experiencing a tremendous amount of change and growth and so are we.

One of the greatest life lessons Thailand has and continues to teach me is to accept change graciously as a part of my daily life.

Control is not peace.  Trust is peace.

In the past few months, not only have we faced a global pandemic, but the death of a great mentor and friend and now the loss of some great friends and team mates.

Last week, we took my good friend and coworker at Faithful Heart, Andy Parker, to the airport with his family to move back to the US full time.

Ice Cream helps with sadness

Friends help too!

Visiting a Karen Village to see Taxi

I have been trying to learn to process my emotions better, so I don't end up taking out my feelings on undeserving people later.  (Men:  Most of us are very bad at processing our emotions, just FYI)

So, this week I took a few hours to go to a retreat center here in Chiang Mai.  Ironically, it was pouring rain that morning which made my motorbike ride somewhat difficult and left me soggy.

It is surprising how a few hours of silence can help you better understand all the stuff happening inside of you (or at least become aware of it).

I heard someone once say that God always speaks to us, but he never shouts.  I think that is true.

For me this past week, I took some time to try to name all the things I was feeling: sadness, fear, loneliness, insecurity, disappointment.

For me, and maybe for you, this is an unprecedented time.  And that can leave us feeling very uncertain about the future.

And if we have come to equate feeling sure of the future with peace and well being, it is a blow to see all our carefully laid plans vanish.

About 80 years of experience living overseas at this table

This friend I will miss a ton.

Motorcycles also help with sadness.

But Life stubbornly refuses to stop for us until we feel ready to face it.

So here we are in this unprecedented present, moving relentlessly into an unknown future.

Our kids are preparing to return to school.
Bills are due.
New families need help.
Our house parents need support.
Visa's need to be renewed for another year.
We need a new accountant.
We need to find new tenants.
The sink is full of dishes and I think my daughter pooped in her diaper.

Death and taxes, diapers and dishes.  Some things are more certain than we think.

It wasn't long ago, I was really uncertain about what the future held for us and for Faithful Heart.
So much was changing so fast.

And here we are again, kind of post-Covid, wondering about the future, trying to live in the present and do our work today.

Fish!

We miss this sweet family already.

Driving to the hot springs with friends in the back of the pickup!
(Don't worry Mom, very short trip)

I don't know what you all are going through or facing.

Maybe it is the loss of someone you love too or the lonely feeling of having a friend move on to a new work somewhere else.

It's ok to be there (wherever you are right now).

God is there too.

It's ok to not know what to expect next.
Just don't let yourself become cynical.

Life is better than the shows on Netflix and how the news makes it seem.
(It might be a good idea to unplug for a bit and go be with people).

Throwing kids in pools.
Dad's relaxing.

This is new ground for all of us.

Those old prophets, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers once sang:

"Destruction leads to a very rough road but it also breeds creation"

New ground is new opportunity too.  Unprecedented times breed unprecedented innovation.

May God delight us in the new things He will do in the midst of hard times.
We are right there with you.

Lots of love,

Matt, Audrey, Ezra, and little Squishy (Sienna)

Hello Baby Judah!  We love you already!

Fun in the sun!  Phillip turns 19!

The pond is full again

Greetings from Thailand!

We have two young children, so we are always having moments that go something like this:

Child:  "Daddy, what is that?"

Adult (sort of):  "That is a gecko."

Child:  "Oh.  What is a jecko?"

Adult: "Its like a little lizard" (adult does not really know what a gecko is either)

Child:  "Oh.  That's really neat"

Adult:  "Yes, it is.  (suddenly thinking about how cool a gecko really is and how remarkable our world in general really is to have things like geckos).

Two lovely ladies!

Ezra got a new bike and learned to ride overnight
About half way through quarantine...

Children live in the present, and we need to learn how to do the same.
Their focus is squarely on the thing in front of them.

This gives them a great advantage over most of us.
I am a planner.  I want to know what is coming and when,
That can be a positive thing, or a negative thing.

I often miss the good things in front of me because I am either looking ahead to tomorrow or dwelling in the past of yesterday.

I also fail to give my best to the task at hand, because I am over-analyzing the tasks of yesterday or over-anticipating the tasks of tomorrow. (Anyone else?)

I had a good crew!

Pii Nice can do just about anything

Ez and I call it the first pop-up camper in Thailand...more pictures to come!

George MacDonald said:

"To the foundation of yesterday's work well done, the work of  tomorrow will be sure to fit."

The best way to prepare for tomorrow is to make sure the work of today is done well---whatever it may be.

And to do that, we need to stop all the worrying about the future, or the analyzing of the past, and find the work God has given us today, and do it well.

One of our new families we are helping at Faithful Heart!

And another....

And another....

And some more...

Like many of you, we are more than ready to have our normal lives back.
We miss our friends, our favorite restaurants, and the habits and rhythms of everyday life.
We also have compassion and catastrophe fatigue kicking in.

It is hard to keep getting worked up about every new crisis or statistic, and it is hard to keep responding compassionately to the ever flowing needs around us.

Here our children come to rescue us.

The world may be burning, but if there is no fire within your reach, then fill your buckets, pray, and play corn hole with your kids.

We lost a dear friend, and mentor Joel Tardy.  Well done my friend.  We will miss you.

Some good friends moved back to Sweden after completing the adoption of their daughter,
and we were sad to see them go.

These two lovely ladies are sisters, who hardly knew each other.
Now, Mii (right) will begin taking care of her sister May (left).
We love these moments!
Take responsibility for what you can do.
Release responsibility for what you can't.
Pray about everything.

Prayer is not a passive way to avoid acting, but a way to discern how and where to act---and where not to act.

The same goes with our compassion.

We are not capable of fixing all the worlds problems.
We are not even capable of caring about all the worlds problems.
One God can carry that load.

If we try, we will only burn out, and end up numb---hardly caring or feeling at all.
But every one of us has been given responsibility for some of the world's problems.

Our newest college student, Yawsii!
Cute baby Judah!

So, what is the thing in front of you?

Is it a neighbor in need?
Is it a lonely sibling?
Is it a game of corn hole with your children?

Don't go too far ahead.

That will overwhelm us and we will end up eating Cheetos on the couch watching Netflix, feeling mildly guilty.

Don't go too far back.

You are more than your mistakes.  You couldn't have known the future.  You have the gift of today.  Receive it with arms wide open.

Our foster family came over to use the yard for games one night

Be careful of the noodles with "special herbs"

Kindergarten in the Lahu village

Other bikers!

So when you stretch to help your neighbors during this crisis, and are making sacrifices to help others, and your landlord announces she is increasing your rent by 40%, you could panic.

Or get angry, and bitter.

Or, you could talk about geckos with your kids and get some perspective. (Best answer)

Or, if you are like me, you spend the next few days going through all of those options, and then settling down again saying:

"Ok, God.  What do you want me to do today?  I can't control most things.  What can I control?  Where can I bring a little more good into the world?  What is my work today?"

Sadly, there are 4 churches in this tiny village, and they don't support each other

We love Pii Moey!  Our new social worker is doing a great job.

Thankful for these two good friends!

So take a jog, bake cookies, talk about geckos, play corn hole.

Share some of those cookies with your neighbors.

Give some money away to a good cause no matter how little you have (one great way to disarm fear, is to be generous).

Spend more time with the people you love (not reading the news or on your phones, do something fun together).

The thing in front of you may be a lot of fun.  Don't miss it.

Learning with you, with lots of love,

Matt, Audrey, Ezra, & Sienna

Andy giving the college kids driving lessons, we will miss him when he moves back to America in June!

Men at work!
